Billion + Change Goes to the White House

As I mentioned in this post, APCO Worldwide is a proud member of Billion + Change, a movement that is seeking pledges to establish the largest commitment of pro bono service in history. Spearheaded by Jean Case, B+C had a rocky start, but with more than 200 organizations currently on board and more than $1.8 billion of pro bono service already committed, I think it’s safe to say that B+C has hit its stride. Earlier this week, I attended a B+C forum at the White House, where recognition was paid to current members of the movement, best practices were shared, and the tremendous impact associated with skills based volunteering was celebrated.

More Bang for the Buck

Who doesn’t like the idea of getting more for your dollar? I know I always give myself a pat on the back when my grocery cashier tells me, “You saved $35 this week!” For me, it’s a sense of accomplishment with little consequence either way, but for many families, savings can mean the difference between a meal on the table and going to bed hungry. Luckily there are organizations like Share Our Strength®, a national nonprofit whose goal is to end childhood hunger in America. One of their many programs is Cooking Matters®, which empowers low-income families with the skills, knowledge and confidence to prepare healthy and affordable meals.

A New Take on “Innovation Time” to Address Something Workers Want and Companies Need

Companies like 3M and Google are well known for products and concepts that were born during their companies’ innovation time – when employees are allowed to use a portion of their paid time to hatch their own ideas. Think of the Post-it note and Gmail, developed by employees through 3M’s “15 percent time” and Google’s “20 percent time,” respectively.

Highlights from Chicago

This week brought several members of the APCO team to the Windy (and unusually warm) City of Chicago as we joined Points of Light for their annual National Conference on Volunteering and Service. It’s hard to pick one favorite session or speaker, so here’s a rundown of some of my highlights from this year

Shared Value and the Bottom of the Pyramid

There was an interesting post last week on the HBR Blog Network. It posited that many companies focused on the bottom of the economic pyramid have failed because they’ve ascribed to a philosophy, based on C.K. Prahalad’s work, that they needed to “aim for low prices, low profit margins, and high sales volumes.” The author takes issue with this, saying companies are well – squeamish – about making anything but a low profit margin when selling to poor populations.

Courageous Conversations in NYC Last Week

Congrats to the CECP team for a successful 2012 Corporate Philanthropy Summit last week. This year’s theme was “courageous conversations,” and the content lived up to that billing. The conference started with Arianna Huffington’s keynote address—she’s such an engaging speaker and had a few great nuggets to share with attendees. My favorite comment from her is: “You all believe in economic chivalry. Capitalism will not survive without a moral foundation.” And she had some great advice for CR practitioners with respect to dealing with the media: “You need to be relentless in talking about the topic--it’s not just one big announcement that will get you attention.”
